Health Facts Newsletter: November 2017 – Men’s Health Month – Prostate Cancer Awareness
Happy November
What is November? November is an annual movement that started in 2003 where men grow mustaches during November to promote men’s health in areas of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health.
What is Prostate Cancer:
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2017 there will be about 161,360 new cases and 26,730 deaths from prostate cancer. This disease is treatable when discovered early. Unfortunately, it is challenging to detect symptoms during the early stages. Even though it is more common at the age of 50 years, there are rare occasions of it occurring in men under the age of 45 years. If you have any family history of prostate cancer, we advise you to have an open dialog about your risk factors with your doctor.
What Helps Prevent Prostate Cancer:
For years it has been proven that creating and adhering to a regular exercise routine improves mental and physical health. It’s never too late to get moving and find a local walk or running event. In addition to increasing physical activity, keeping a healthy weight by eating more fruits and vegetables are small lifestyle changes you can make that have a significant impact on preventing many diseases.
